Consultant
Clinical Experts team of Clinical Nurse and Continence Nurse Consultants provide advice and support for clients and Disability Support Providers.
Clinical Experts are passionate about supporting people with complex health needs. Having worked within the sector for many years we understand the challenges of having complex health needs and can provide advice about best practice and understanding NDISC regulations.
Clinical Nurse Assessment
A comprehensive nurse assessment is a valuable tool for understanding a participants current and future health support needs. The nurse assessment incorporates all aspects of a person’s health including physical, psychological and cultural needs. The assessment reflects on assessments and recommendations from other health professionals such as Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy and medical reports, creating an all-encompassing summary and providing a basis for planning and provision of care.
Continence Assessment
Our continence nurse consultant will come to your home, or preferred location, to discuss your continence needs. We can assist with continence assessment for NDIS funding applications and NDIS plan reviews, provide advice about continence management for adults and children and support you to choose the most appropriate continence products by arranging for samples of continence pads to be sent to you to try in the privacy and comfort of your own home.
The Role of a Clinical Nurse Consultant in Neurology and Continence Management
A Clinical Nurse Consultant (CNC) specialising in neurology and continence management stands at a unique intersection of advanced clinical care, patient advocacy, and interprofessional collaboration. These highly skilled nurses bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the care of patients with neurological disorders, particularly those who face challenges with continence, ensuring both medical excellence and compassionate support for individuals navigating complex health conditions.
CNCs in neurology and continence management are registered nurses with advanced training, holding postgraduate qualifications in their specialty areas. Their expertise encompasses the assessment, diagnosis, and management of a wide array of neurological conditions, such as stroke, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, spinal cord injury, and traumatic brain injury. Given that these conditions frequently impact the nervous system’s control over bladder and bowel function, CNCs play a pivotal role in addressing continence issues that can significantly affect a patient’s quality of life.
Beyond their clinical skills, these consultants excel in holistic, patient-centred care. They blend evidence-based practice with empathetic communication to tailor interventions according to each patient’s physical, psychological, and social needs. By working closely with neurologists, urologists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and social workers, CNCs foster a multidisciplinary approach that promotes optimal patient outcomes.
The Link Between Neurology and Continence
Neurological disorders often disrupt the sophisticated signalling pathways that coordinate bladder and bowel function. Lesions within the brain, spinal cord, or peripheral nerves can result in a spectrum of continence issues, including urgency, incontinence, retention, and constipation. For example, after a stroke, patients may struggle with urge incontinence or difficulty voiding, while individuals with multiple sclerosis or Parkinson’s disease can experience fluctuating or progressive continence challenges. Spinal cord injuries, depending on the level and severity, can cause neurogenic bladder or bowel, with profound implications for independence and dignity.
A CNC in this field possesses a deep understanding of neuroanatomy, pathophysiology, and the mechanisms underpinning continence. They can distinguish between different types of neurogenic bladder or bowel dysfunction, conduct thorough assessments, and recommend tailored management plans. Their expertise ensures early identification and intervention, which can prevent complications such as infections, skin breakdown, and psychosocial distress.
